THE ROSH GOES AGAINST THE RABBI WHO OPPOSES THE ERUV

“You Rabbi Yaakov son of Rabbi Moshe of Valencia I already wrote to you regarding the Eruv that all the exiles of Israel have used to permit carrying within their cities and you have forbidden it in your city and you wrote to me your reasoning and I let you know that your thoughts have no logic nor substance. And I am warning you to go back on your stance and let the people carry through fixing the alleys (With the shape of the opening) according to the usage and custom of the Gedolim in you cities. And I have heard that you cause the many to sin regarding the desecration of the Shabbat, therefore I decree upon you that after a few weeks that you receive this letter with the appropriate witnesses you shall have established the Eruv in your city. And if you don’t make the Eruv as I have written I will put you in Niddui. And had this occurred in the days of the Sanhedrin, they would have put you to death because you come and oppose the Talmud that Rav Ashi arranged and you dispute against all the great Rabbanim that lived up until this day, those who already died Z’L and those who still live. Therefore return from your mistake and don’t forsake the Torah of Moshe Rabbenu Peace be upon him.

THE WAY OF THE BAAL SHEM TOV TZK'L

I heard about the students of the Baal Shem Tov that they were once sitting together and were discussing the thing upon which the head and leader of the generation must be most watchful of. Some of the students said that the most important is to supervise the slaughtering of animals (ZEVICHA) that the Shochet will be G-d fearing and all the other details relating to the slaughter as well because G-d forbid, forbidden foods clog the heart and it becomes dull to the light of the Torah. Some of the students said that the most important thing for the leader was to be diligent about the laws of the Eruv (ERUVIN) because the laws of Shabbat are like Mountains that hang on a hair strand (Chagiga 10a) and this prohibition is very grave. And there are some students that said that the most important thing is to supervise the Mikvah (MIKVAOT) that it will be Kosher without any doubt, because when the foundation of the building that is man is G-d forbid built without Kashrut then it will be very difficult for that man to be able to vanquish the evil side, G-d save us. And after this the Master the Baal Shem Tov ZTK’L said: I give testimony that at this precise moment they were arguing in the Yeshiva of the heavens which of these things was the most important and they concluded that all of them were and as a sign of these three things there is the verse (CHABAKUK 3:12) : “BE ZAAM TITZAD ARETZ BE AF TADUSH GOYYIM”  “You marched through the land in indignation, you threshed the nations in anger”. And the word ZAAM  has the first letters of the words ZEVICHA ERUVIN MIKVAOT. And all these are the foundation of the world.

CONTROL OF THE MOUTH IS
THE MAIN TASK IN LIFE

But this is man's main task, not to go after his desires, but (Psalms 32:9) “To restrain himself with a bit and bridle when he is being groomed.” Man must deprive himself until he dies, not by fasting or asceticism, but by controlling his mouth and desires. This is teshuvah. And this is the whole reward of the World-to-Come, as it is written (Proverbs 6:23 ): “For the commandment is a lamp and the Torah is a light” - but “the way to life is the rebuke that disciplines.” And that is worth more than any amount of fasting and self-affliction!

 For every second that man controls his tongue, he merits some of the “hidden [by G-d for the righteous] light,” something which no angel or [other] creature can imagine (Midrash). And it is stated (Psalms 34:13,14): “Who is the man who desires life, and loves days that he may see good? WHEN THE TORAH IS STUDIED FOR SELFISH MOTIVES

When a person studies the Oral Law lo lishmah, without any particular intent, and without love and fear [of G-d], i.e., without involving the Tree of Life which is the love and fear [of G-d, his Torah study will not elevate him spiritually. On the contrary,] because of its enclothement in the garments of material concerns, and because his entire occupation is with material entities - even the information and understanding in which he is involved is material in nature - and particularly if it has already enclothed itself in the garments of good and evil, i.e., what is forbidden, [as well as] what is permitted, this [study] will lead a person to yeshus and self- concern. He will fall from [his spiritual rung], and ultimately, he will study with an undesirable intent, for his own self- interest, e.g., to enhance his honor, so that he be considered a scholar and the like, or to use as a medium for earning a livelihood, as Rav Chayim Vital writes in his introduction to Shaar HaHakdamos, one of the eight sections of [his classic work, Etz Chayim I.

The Tzaddik disappeared and no man pays any attention to this. Due to our many sins we are already in the second half of the millennium that corresponds to the sefirah of Yesod (Foundation)…and no one knows why and how the Tzaddik is gone. And the pious don’t realize that the main cause is the evil (He who spills semen in vain is called evil) …and if the generation would guard the holiness of the Covenant [BRIT] they would sweeten the quality of Yessod and it would not get lost in the Galut [exile], for the sword of Esav only rules and has power in the constellation of the MAADIM [EDOM - DAM – BLOOD - MARS THE RED PLANET], and he who is made to bleed the blood of the Milah, then the Mazal of MAADIM has no power over him. But he who defiles and damages his Covenant, his prepuce [ORLAH] grows and he becomes like one who was not circumcised, and through this the blessing from G-d cease, and this causes the death of the Tzaddikim and the length of the exile to extend.   (Sefer Yismach Moshe, Parashat Devarim)

AND IF WE BEHAVE IN THEM WITH SANCTITY AND RESPECT, THEN IN THE FUTURE, THEY WILL BE FIXED IN THE LAND OF ISRAEL (MEGILLA 29). AND THEY NOW POSSESS THE SANCTITY OF THE LAND OF ISRAEL , AND THE PRAYERS ARE TAKEN TO THE GATES OF HEAVEN. BUT IF G-D FORBID, WE BEHAVE IN THEM WITH DISRESPECT AND WE TALK THINGS THAT ARE NOT RELATED TO TORAH, THEN THE BREATH OF THOSE EMPTY WORDS IS IMPURE, AND DRESSES ITSELF UP IN THE MINISTER (ANGEL) THAT CONTROLS OUTSIDE THE LAND OF ISRAEL, AND HE BECOMES THE OWNER OF THE SYNAGOGUE, G-D FORBID, AND HE RECEIVES THE PRAYERS AND INSERTS THEM IN THE FORCES OF EVIL (CHITZONIM), AND THIS IS LIKE AVODA ZARA (IDOLATRY) AND ALSO IT’S ON THE LEVEL OF: “THE ONE WHO LIVES OUTSIDE THE LAND OF ISRAEL RESEMBLES AS IF HE HAS NO G-D” (KETUBOT 110 B)   (CHATAM SOFER,  DERASHOT B, 309, 4)

EXPLAINS THE REASONING
OF KING SALOMON
ON THE ERUV

In the Gemarah it is written: When King Salomon peace be upon him established the law of the Eruv and the washing of the hands [Netilat Yadaim], a celestial voice declared:  “My Son if your heart is wise, my heart will be also gladdened (Mishle 23:15). Talmud Shabbat 14. And one can ask Why do they said this verse when he also instituted Netilat Yadaim and not only regarding the Eruv? And it seems to me with the help of heaven, that when the law of Eruvim were established, there arose the opportunity for foolish and simple people to argue that the Eruv was established for enjoyment, in order to lift the heavy burden of the prohibition to carry from one place to the other and that the intention is not Le Shem Shamaim and the spirit of Hashem is not involved in this decree; But after King Salomon also decreed Netilat Yadaim which involves great discomfort and a great yoke which forbids man to eat without washing his hands, and sometimes it is very cold and it is difficult to wash, and sometimes there is no water ready for Netilat Yadaim, then we see the great burden King Salomon brought upon him and upon the whole world, But through this we see that the spirit of Hashem is present with King Salomon and that his actions were Le Shem Shamaim, and then we see that the spirit of Hashem was also there in the decree of Eruvim and that it was not decreed to take any burden away, G-d forbid,  and then given that he issued the two decrees of Eruvim and Netilat Yadaim the verse says about him: “My son if your heart is wise…to grab the truth and the real will of Hashem then my heart will also be gladdened because now my son you are wise in having decreed Netilat Yadaim  and you will prevent any criticism on having instituted Eruvim so that no one will say that from your heart you wished to establish the Eruv in order to derive pleasure and he who makes light on the words of the Sages is as if he opposes and contradicts the SHECHINA. How much will an individual regret, when with a mere admonition, he could have extricated himself from all these punishments. Let him not be misled by the fact that others will share the punishment with him considering that he is not the only one in the city to have transgressed thereby finding false comfort. As an analogy: In the event a person is a co-signer on a note encumbering a debt of millions of dollars, regardless the number of additional co-signers, when the debt becomes due, even if required to reimburse only a small fraction thereof, it could amount to a sizable sum, which will be quite painful to pay.

Similarly, since today the ingestion and partaking of prohibited foods has become unfortunately widespread when the time for reckoning arrives, it will amount to many thousands of olive sized pieces of prohibited foods. Consequently, those capable of arousing the populace in their vicinity to observe kashrus strictly and thereby prevent untold thousands of Jews who were lax from eating non-kosher, will surely be considered the most guilty. Our sages admonish (Tana D'vei Eliyahu): Anyone able to protest and refrains to do so; Anyone able to elicit repentance and does not do so, all blood spilled will be credited to his negligence and held against him...

I ACCUSE THE RABBIS WHO GRANT HECHSHERIM AND PERMIT NON KOSHER MEAT TO BE SOLD

I Accuse. I accuse many rabbis, that grant hechsherim, who knowingly or otherwise, or out of neglect, permit non kosher meat to be sold under their stamp of approval both wholesale and retail; the seller is an unscrupulous person with Torah sanction.

 I accuse many rabbis who grant hechsherim, to whose attention many Jews have brought this problem, that Trefot are being sold under their hashgachah, yet they have kept this matter quiet and permitted the butchers to continue to sell Trefot to their hearts' content.

I ACCUSE THE RABBIS WHO ARE NOT INVOLVED YET DO NOT SAY ANYTHING

I accuse many rabbis, who, although they themselves have no part in the hechsherim, nevertheless, know about them and still remain silent. There is a sort of mutual reciprocal agreement to keep quiet about each other's false hescherim. Perhaps it is because they wish to avoid a chilul Hashem. They forget, however, that where there is a chilul Hashem, we do not impart any honor to a rabbi. I accuse the very great rabbis, the leaders of our people, because of the internal strife. These disputes are not for the sake of Heaven; if one says that something is prohibited, the other one must say it is permissible, if one says that something is contaminated, the other must say that it is pure. It is impossible to bring order into the chaotic Kashrut situation, especially in the meat and chicken markets. I accuse the rabbis who have also neglected Kashrut in other fields. They have, for instance, disregarded Kashrut in pastries, when most bakeries use egg powder in baking Rolls and challos, even though it is known, almost without a doubt, that this is made from eggs of non-kosher birds. Some Jewish bakeries even use lard, as simple as that.

I accuse the rabbis, because of whose negligence, the laws of cholov akum (gentile milk and gentile cheeses) have virtually been forgotten. I know that there are various heterim for this, but they apply only when it is impossible to obtain Jewish milk and cheese. In our situation, however, with a little effort, order could be brought into this chaos, and "if one can be good, why should he be bad?"...

The holy Sefer ha Brit (Part 1, Chapter 3) states: “Be wary of all new customs and groups that do not follow the ways our forefathers knew. Even if these people are Torah scholars and doers of acts of kindness, if they deviate even an inch from the Shulchan Aruch do not follow them. If they conduct themselves contrary to the Shulchan Aruch, distance yourselves from their ways and don’t go near their homes. Because also among the followers of Shabetai Tzvi [may his name be blotted out] there were many Torah scholars with great Torah knowledge. And there is nothing new that will be good and won’t bring sin in its wake. Therefore, be very careful about new things. And this rule should always be in front of you: “The one who turns his face away from the Shulchan Aruch, even a little has no portion in the G-d of Yaakov and in his congregation.”

Therefore whoever has the strength of standing in front of the leaders, will see to it that it is transformed from potential into reality the Establishment of an Eruv in that city to save many souls from sinning, and through this his sin will be expiated and his merits will increase.

A person who experiences a night-time emission should recite the following ten psalms on the same day: Psalms 16, 32, 41, 42, 59, 77, 90, 105, 137, 150. One who recites these psalms on the same day need have no further fears about the harm such an emission can cause. Any damage will certainly be repaired through doing this. It is a very great Tikkun (Likute Etzot 11, 92).

 

'You must be very careful to immerse in a Mikvah on the same day that you have an unclean experience. If you cannot immerse the first thing in the morning, do so any time during the day, even toward evening. It is most important to immerse on the very same day…'Everyone experiences a nocturnal emission at one time or another. I call you to bear witness that these Ten Psalms are a beneficial remedy for this unclean experience. They are an absolute remedy.
